Special tradition to commemorate Tasua in Khorramabad, Iran
Iranian Shiite Muslim women cover their faces as they light candles during a traditional religion ceremony in Khorramabad, a city in Lorestan province, 499 km (310 miles) west of Tehran, Iran on January 18, 2008. Ashura is the peak of ten days of mourning during the Islamic month of Muharram, the first month of the lunar calendar, when Shiite Muslims mourn the slaughter of Imam Hussein 1366 years ago in what is now Karbala in southern Iraq. During the day of Tasua, the women mourners in this city cover their faces, and walk in silence as they knock on the doors of forty houses and light candles in forty spots.
